TOUR DESCRIPTION
Discover Comillas on a carefully designed morning excursion that will inspire you from the very first moment.
This is the only Modernist town in Cantabria, a remarkable destination where history, art, and landscape come together seamlessly. Throughout the tour, you will learn about the fascinating connection between Comillas and Antonio López y López, the first Marquis of Comillas, a key figure behind the city’s development and distinctive character.
Our experience begins with a visit to Villa Quijano, better known as Gaudí’s Capricho. This truly unique building, inspired by sunflowers and music, is one of the earliest works of Antoni Gaudí and one of the very few he designed outside Catalonia. Built in 1885 for the Cantabrian lawyer Máximo Díaz de Quijano, El Capricho marks the birth of the Modernist movement and stands today as one of northern Spain’s most iconic architectural landmarks.
We then head to the heart of Comillas for a short break to soak up the local atmosphere before continuing on to the Old Major Seminary, formerly the University of Comillas. This impressive complex, designed by renowned Catalan architects Joan Martorell and Lluís Domènech i Montaner, showcases a rich blend of architectural styles, including Modernism. The visit is optional; if you prefer, you may use this time to explore Comillas at your own pace and discover its hidden corners.
Before starting our return journey, we will enjoy a panoramic drive through the city, giving you the opportunity to admire some of Comillas’ most emblematic sites, such as the Palace of Sobrellano and its Chapel-Pantheon, the old cemetery, and the charming Port of Comillas—the perfect finale to a morning filled with history, architecture, and charm.
